Dog Handling Lessons: Getting Ready for the Show
These lessons will give you useful tips on how to prepare your dog for a dog show.
This online course was developed by Stalina Efimovna Mininson , a legendary Latvian dog care professional, certified teacher and training instructor.
Biographical notes:
Stalina Efimovna Mininson was born in 1932. In 1953 she graduated from Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute and in 1958 – from Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) Pedagogical Institute (where she specialized in teaching biology and chemistry).
In 1974 Ms. Mininson joined RUDES (Riga Urban Dog Enthusiast Society) with a stray dog she had picked up on the street. From 1976 to 1994 she served as the head of the “My Friend” club.
From 1977 to 1993 she served as the deputy head of the TMC (Teaching Methodology Council) of RUDES.
Since 1977 she has been reading a beginner course in dog care and training. Ms. Mininson started coaching dog handlers in 1980. It has become her full-time occupation since 1995.
First and foremost, these lessons are aimed at those who have the very basic knowledge of dog training and those who have yet to learn the fascinating art of teaching your pet the best of canine wisdom.
The methodology that we offer here for the owners to develop basic dog show participation skills rests on several pillars:
1) the immense experience and personal methodological discoveries of Ms. Mininson gained throughout her 30-year-long career as a dog care and training specialist;
2) the experience and expertise of many skilled instructors and handlers in Latvia;
3) the experience of the actual judges of the conformation shows;
4) a view of handling as a type of training that conforms to all general rules of animal training;
5) the theoretical literature on handling and dog breeds.
Our online lessons will provide the owners with a thorough theoretical base. We will discuss the most common mistakes made by the first time dog owners, look at the different pitfalls of handling and much, much more. New lessons will appear every 1-2 weeks.
